Weird Furniture Fails You Won’t Believe Are Real
What is a home without some good furniture in it? Not very comfortable, that’s for sure. From the bed you sleep on to the table where you share your meals to the couch you watch movies on, furniture is important. Finding the right pieces to fit your aesthetic is a big deal, particularly if you want your furniture to stand out and get fun commentary whenever guests come over. But then there is a line where fun pieces of furniture cross into the territory of total furniture fails. Now, weird furniture is fun. Who doesn’t love going to somebody’s house and being surprised? Unfortunately, some furniture is just too weird to the point where its functionality becomes entirely questionable. Much of the furniture you’re about to see fits that latter category, with some exceptions. You probably don’t want a banana-shaped pool table, a stainless-steel beanbag, or a sofa that resembles the female anatomy, to say nothing of a sumo wrestler coffee table… but hey, at least these pieces aren’t boring, right? Enjoy browsing through these worst furniture fails in the world, and don’t forget to SHARE these wacky home decorations with your friends!
The Banana Pool Table
If you’re cool enough to have a billiards table in your house, good for you. If you’re cool enough to even consider the notion of having a fun, yellow, banana-themed pool table, well, you earn double the props. The problem with the reality of such a concept, unfortunately, is that once it’s shaped like a banana, it ceases to truly be a pool table anymore. There are only four pockets, three ball colors — white, yellow, and brown — and a weird angle to the table that will only confuse the expert player, or give the wrong skills to newcomers. If you really want a pool table that isn’t a true pool table, though, this will cost you over $18,000.
This Sectional Gets a Little Too Personal
The couch above appeared on Craigslist some years ago, with the seller claiming that it had originally cost $20,000, but he had to sell it off quickly (and more cheaply) because his wife hated it so much. Want to guess why? The closer you look at this sofa, the more suggestive it becomes, and it’s really, really hard to imagine how such a piece of furniture was ever designed in the first place, unless it was for a so-called “gentleman’s club.”
Seven Pillows, One Chair
The chair above will cost you $3,504 if you want it, and while it’s handmade from solid beech wood and has a nice concept, the end result truly serves as an illustration of a company “not seeing the forest through the trees.” Why did this chair need to come with seven (seven!) detachable pillows? How can you sit in it without drowning in them? And if you take a couple pillows off, what else are you supposed to do with them? Not so great, in practice.
Lips Sofa
Here’s one wacky furniture piece you might’ve seen a few times before. Inspired by Salvador Dali’s famous painting of Mae West, this furniture was designed in 1970 by Studio 65 architect Franco Audrito for a Milan fitness center. Sometimes called a “Marilyn,” and other times known as a “Bocca,” this lip-shaped sofa is definitely unique, and probably quite comfortable, but would look quite off in most people’s living rooms. That said, these pieces are more popular than you might think.
Baseball Glove Chair
If you lived in an eighties movie about a kid who loved baseball with all of his heart, but couldn’t catch well enough to make the team (cue training montage, with inspirational rock song as the backdrop), that kid would have this cute armchair in his room. Coming in at $69.99, this baseball glove “sofa” is, in theory, perfect for all MLB fans out there, young and old, who just love the idea of sitting in somebody’s palm while they watch the World Series.
A Bed Made Just For You
While the bed pictured above is real, it’s highly questionable that anyone has ever (successfully) slept on it, and even more doubtful that such a design will ever be mass-produced. The reasons, of course, are obvious: while this sucker would definitely save space in your studio apartment, the notion of laying in the exact same position all night, every night, is not so appealing to people who prefer to turn a couple times on their way to dreamland. Good luck getting any rest, huh?
A Sectional That’s a Bit Too Suggestive
The photo above is a terrific example of why, when you’re figuring out a layout for your furniture, you should look at it from all angles before making a final decision. From the side, this comfy sectional layout probably looks great, but just have any male person stand at either the top or bottom and you’re likely to hear a few snickers, if not outright discomfort. Mistakes happen, but this is a pretty bad one, and not something you should replicate.
See the Inside of Your Toilet
Why, oh why, does this toilet exist? Was there really a person, somewhere out there, who has been privileged enough to never have to clean their own toilet, and thus doesn’t realize the utter horror of an entirely clear, transparent one, which would certainly be covered in disgusting stains within a few days? Maybe they just liked the idea of watching their waste move through the pipes. Maybe they’ve had maid service their whole life. Who knows what they were thinking, and yet, here it is. Don’t order one too quickly.
Don't Sit Down
Okay, to be fair, the chair above was never designed for you to put in your living room and sit on. It’s the product of a German artist, Kerstin Schulz, who was commissioned to design a special piece of furniture for the 100th anniversary of the first hexagonally shaped pencil, the Castell 9000. See all those points? Yes, that’s right, this is a chair designed entirely of Castell 9000 pencils, sharpened to their maximum points, and while you’d probably never want to rest on it, it sure does look cool.
Beans of Steel
At first glance, the beanbag above doesn’t look too weird. It’s just silver and shiny, right? However, if you were to jump on it and expect a soft, fluffy surface, you’d be in for a rude awakening. Despite its apparent design, this beanbag was made from stainless steel material, so it’s really more of a beanbag tribute than an actual beanbag. On the upside, at least it probably never wears down the way that conventional beanbags do.
See the Evolution
This chair, designed by Spanish artist Nacho Carbonell, is part of a larger installation designed to show the difference between people’s public and private lives. Constructed from papier-mâché, with chicken-wire frames, these pieces allow a person to sit on the bench, in “public,” or crawl into the tunnel for private thoughts. While not exactly a living room furnishing — nor intended to be — it’s nonetheless a clever and thought-provoking design, which admittedly looks like something from a dark science fiction movie.
Wooly as Can Be
Well hey, if you want to sit down and rest for a while, you probably don’t want something hard and cold. Fair enough. But this? The woolly chair pictured above is a bit too snuggly for comfort, and that’s before you notice the two warm, brown eyes that will be staring at your butt as you sit down. Regardless of intention, trying to “relax” in this chair would feel about the same as relaxing on a dead animal.
The Island of Broken Toes
Kitchen islands are in style, and they are getting more popular all the time. When you first look at the island above, it doesn’t seem too unusual, but peer closer at the piece’s legs, and you’ll notice the problem. Ouch? Frankly, there’s absolutely no reason for them to jut out like that, and it’s hard to imagine how many people might’ve tripped or stubbed their toes on those things. It’s the sort of thing where the designer said, “Ah, it’ll be fine,” consciously ignoring the inevitable consequences.
Silence of the Lambs
If the woolly chair wasn’t creepy enough for your liking, try sitting on this thing for a few hours. One head looking at you would be creepy enough, but three? Let’s face it, if you were to ask the production designer for a horror movie to come up with a scary piece of furniture for a serial killer to have inside their shack in the woods, well, this would probably be it. Scary stuff, for sure.
The Octopus Chair
Okay, so this chair is also quite scary, but in a surprisingly cool way. While it might look like a relatively ordinary piece of furniture from the front, that octopus crawling out of the back is the perfect way to scare off all your squeamish visitors. While this probably wouldn’t fit in most living rooms, given that those tentacles are a prime tripping hazard, it would go quite well with the rest of your gothic friend’s creepy décor.
Crib… or Cage?!
God only knows who came up with this concept, but one thing’s for sure: they must really, really hate babies. This cage-like crib, which you’re presumably intended to put your beloved baby in when they're down for a nap, would fit better in a Tim Burton movie than an ordinary person’s house. While the prison bars are unnerving enough, an additional creep factor is added by the legs, which look like they’re about to crawl away with your child.
“Stick” Your Bum in This Seat (or Don’t)
This so-called Stick Chair, designed by Carlo Volf, was designed as a tribute to the classic spindleback chair. People really loved it, so maybe there’s more to it than meets the eye. That said, at first glance, it certainly doesn’t look like the most comfortable chair that you could ever sit in, to say nothing of the problems that could arise with children (poking themselves in the eye, much?) or an adult trying to sit down at the wrong angle, and getting… well, you know... impaled. Cool-looking design, though.
The Handsy Chair
About the only thing that could make this chair any scarier is if it had a cute, winking face on the seat. Jeez. While it’s certainly intended to look cute, what with those little four-fingered cartoon hands reaching out for a hug, the overall effect is one of discomfort. Who the heck is this chair? Why does it want to hug me so bad? How long is it going to hold its creepy little hands out, begging for me to sit down and get squeezed to death?
Weird Isn’t Always Cool
Be honest, if you saw the above cabinet in somebody’s bedroom, your initial reaction would be to think it was cool. And yes, it certainly does look cool. However, form should always follow function, and the function of this cabinet is a bit lacking. Having those top drawers slashed in half makes them too small for much use, and their slanted angle only worsens the whole shebang. Most likely, only the bottom drawer has enough space for your socks and underwear.
The Great Toilet/Sink Combo
This is an example of someone trying to save money, and save space, and just saying “screw it” whenever a friend offers helpful criticism. As you can see, instead of having proper plumbing beneath the sink, the water just dumps into the urinal. While the above design might hypothetically save you a plumbing bill, it’s fraught with discomfort. Yes, technically, you do pee and brush your teeth into pipes that go into the same endzone, but how much do you really want to think about that, while engaging in these activities … or see them mixed together?
Sumo Wrestler Coffee Table
Creepy at best, and racially offensive at worst, this truly bizarre piece of furniture — featuring a crouched sumo wrestler carrying your coffee on his back — is intricately designed, carefully sculpted, and just horrendous in every way. Selling for $540, it’s hard to imagine that anyone in the world has actually ordered this sumo wrestler coffee table, but if you do see it in someone’s living room, you truly have to question their taste (and their senses, for that matter). Yikes.
Perfect for Date Night, but Not Solo Dinners
Sometimes, you see a piece of furniture and wonder if it was intended as a prank. But no, the above table is real. You could put it in your house, and if you still haven’t figured it out from the image, it’s a seesaw table. If you want to sit down, you need a partner to sit on the opposite side of the bench. While the metaphor is nice, the practicality of such a piece leaves something to be desired.
Goodnight Forever
Some people really, really love vampires. You know that already. What you might not realize, though, is the crazy lengths that these folks will go to when it comes to living out their Dracula fantasies, such as sleeping in a bed that’s designed to look like an actual coffin. Now, try to imagine laying down in this, and not being terrified that some crazy person is going to close the lid on you, ignore your cries, and put you six feet under.
So Many Pandas
If you’re a big fan of pandas, maybe you’ll love this limited-edition panda chair. Or maybe not, because it’s pretty dang weird to look at it. Now, who knows just how comfortable it would be to sit on dozens upon dozens of stuffed animals like this, but the chances are, you probably will not ever get the chance to find out. Only 25 of these adorable panda chairs exist, and they’ll certainly cost you a pretty penny.
The Terror Bed
By this point, you’ve seen some seriously warped and/or disturbing beds. This one, though, is certainly the worst. The bed itself is fine, but the whole “let’s have a giant wooden lid held up a rickety twig” concept isn’t the sort of thing that easily lulls people to sleep at night. Sweet dreams? Not quite. However, thankfully enough, you won’t find this bed at your local retailer, because it was specially designed for an event at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto.
